I've decided to ressurect this dying beast, and I was wondering if anyone was interested in helping me. See, while I realize I've got all of the materials over here, making it difficult for people to help out with coding... I could still use some help.

What kind of people I could use:

People that can write (good grammer and such) creative passages for descriptions (spells, classes, equipment, etc)

People that can proofread and edit, not only the text but perhaps also the rules and so on

People that can help me set up the rules and 'the numbers' of the game, mostly the Magitek system (& perhaps the espers), which I have basically done, but I'd like someone to bounce it off of, and perhaps have help streamline it a bit

People that can make and edit cool images (using any program you feel comfortable with, be it photoshop, paintshop, paint, who cares as long as it looks good)[/list:u]
So, uhm... If you're interested in helping, or if you have something to contribute, just let me know by posting here...

Oh, duh, and here's the link to my FFRPS website:

I've done a bit of spell work lately, got over 20 spells written up (17 already coded and ready to go)... While it doesn't sound like much, it's a lot for not doing anything for what, about 6 months!

Well go ahead and use me as a sounding board...as for the stuff I don't promise to be reliable with a task that is given (gotta say the truth). I'm willing to help out a little bit, I dunno with what though.

I might not be the best speller.. but I can most certainly use a dictionary to help for that... I will definately help out! I am mainly good at making systems themselves, not the supplements to use with the systems... So I might be able to work on the Magitek system for you if you like... If not, I am good with the supplements as well, though I havent made enough races (and it seems you have them done anyways) to say I am good at that.. but I can do classes as well...

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

Woo, for fun i made a wandering Moogle cleric, but due to a very low wisdom score he has no head for politics, but if i cast haste on myself i have a +11 to initiative :)

Two serious things, one:
The haste spells in most FF games grant you the ability to go more than once a round, perhaps, just to make the spell more useful, for every 5 points your initiative is over 20 you get an extra partial action you can take after the person with the lowest init score before the round ends or something? that way there's some real bonus to taking the spell.

and secondly, will we be seeing a test game for FFRPS any time soon? or does too much need to be completed?

"If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable."
-Romulan Motto

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

I'm gonna try to run a game, although it'll be lacking a lot of stuff. Hopefully by June I'll run a session.

As for the Haste spell, a few things:

#1) All of those spells are outdated. Feel free to completely ignore them.

#2) Initiative and combat is going to be run differently, as Sevain suggested. I'll post more on that when I'm finished with it.

#3) The Haste spell you looked at is a 0th level spell. C'mon, how useful can a 0th level spell get? Higher level Haste spells allow extra actions.

"You see now they're thinking about banning toy guns... And they're going to keep the fuckin' real ones!"

Repeating this will totally get you laid.

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

Think about it, with this spell alone (+4) you'd need to already have at least a +1 to Dex AND score a natural 20 on your init roll to get the extra partial action, that's not that easy, a +3 to Dex may be more common for other characters, even then you need at least an 18, i don't think that's overpowered.

"If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable."
-Romulan Motto

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

That's not how the initiative thing works. Here's what I've got so far.

Say there are three characters in a battle, Saber, Sevain, and Tux. Saber has a 13 init, Sevain has a 19, and Tux has a 22. Tux goes first. Then Sevain goes, then Saber goes. Normally, that'd be the end of the battle. However, what I think I'm gonna do in FFRPS is subtract everyone's init by 15, and have characters get another standard action, allowing them to move or attack, if they so pleased. Only characters with initiative scores in the positive range get this partial action. Tux would then go again at 7, and Sevain would also go again at initiative 4. The list would look like this:

Tux
Sevain
Saber
Tux
Sevain

Now, one problem with this system is... Next round, Tux would go again right away. The list would look like this, then:

Tux
Sevain
Saber
Tux
Sevain
Tux
Sevain
Saber
Tux
Sevain
Tux
Sevain
Saber
Tux
Sevain

You see the problem with this, I'm sure. What I was thinking is after every round, characters reroll initiative. This, however, poses the problem of more die rolling, which isn't bad, but it can be a strain on the DM to remember who's going where.

Ah ha! Just thought of a new feature. Posting... :D

Ah Saber, count me in in the playtesting. ^_^

Oh, and damn I wish I hadn't deleted that old improved init setup. It's complicated and needs some bookwork, but it does seem to have what you're trying to get... more than one attack in a round for high init?

EDIT: Unfortunately, the site that hosts these rules is gone. However... I've managed to find an Archive...

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

So the new Init system will be like FFX? that one worked well, but in FFX every character had a set init you never saw, and each action took a different amount away from it, an overdrive took away a lot, while using a potion took very little.

"If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable."

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

See, the init system hosted by Acid is just like the ATB from FFT. I toyed around with it for some time, but I didn't want to deviate from the higher = better rulings of the D20 system...

I still feel that the init, and then init -15 works best. What I was thinking about also doing was basically adding a possibility for two more partial actions, one at another -10, and the last at a -5 more.

So, if you had an init of 31, you'd go at 31 (full round action), 16 (partial), 6 (partial), and 1 (partial).

Sounds problematic, but remember; how often have YOU seen an init score of 31?

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

How far has this project..I am still interested in it. I am a final fantasy fan and most attempts of this end up a steaming pile of shit.

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

hey saber, i just took a look at your site on the FF system, and it looks pretty bitchin. as mentioned earlier, it is difficult to transfer a videogame to tabletop (as seen in Diablo) but it looks like you put in some hardcore dedication along with anyone you tested it with. i see you have some work to do on the site, but it looks really cool and it is pretty detailed.

just wanted to state the obvious for anyone that didnt feel appreciated.

Am I gunna have to RP with myself, again?

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

Thanks, but right now... It seems dead. The main reasons I can't seem to do much work on it are the following:

Spells
Monsters

They're just so... Mmmm... Much work, I guess. To create an adequate number of monsters would take FOREVER by myself. Moreover, to balance them and so forth...? Yeah. The same thing comes with the spells.

Now, really, the only solution is more people working on the project. I've asked for help before, and not a lot was garnished from said help. Now, please don't get me wrong. Every and anyone that's helped me, what you did help me with is greatly appreciated. I understand 100% if you don't/didn't do anything, or did and stopped; it's 'my' project, and there's no reason you should help. Just as importantly, you shouldn't feel obligated to help out. Everyone's lives are busy, and I understand that now as much as I did back then.

Which, I guess, leaves me to this last point:

If anyone wants to help, please let me know. I would, if at all possible, like to get an actual 'team' together to work on this. Cuz, trust me, alone this will never, ever, get done. So, if any of you are interested, speak to me. I've got a lot of content and ideas sitting around (the way espers will be handled is done [it's a template, if anyone cares], actually, as are a couple of monsters and some spells and most of the classes) and we could work together to create production schedules or something... Get this project rolling again.

Final Fantasy Role Playing System

I've been working on FFRPS lately, and it's basically been completely redone.

The system this time has a lot more class options (which is something I wasn't exactly pleased about with the earlier version of FFRPS); there are now 15 core classes. Not only that, but FFRPS now has a set of classes called 'Advanced classes' which are basically 15-level prestige classes that require you to multiclass in two core classes in order to take the advanced class at 6th character level. There are currently 10 advanced classes (ony 1 is unfinished; the rest are fully complete). There are also prestige classes that are just like normal d20 prestige classes. So far, I have 9 finished prestige classes, but there are sure to be many more on the way.

I've kept the way 'hp' are handled in FFRPS; that is to say, I'm still going with Vitality Points and Wound Points. Since I'm using most of the spells available in 3.5e D&D, I've had a 'fun' time changing around things to take the hp to vp/wp change into consideration.

One thing that is also fairly large that I've changed is how 'class skills' and multiclassing works. Each core class has a certain number of starting class skills. You choose these class skills from your class's 'class skill list'. I'll give a fake example shortly. Also, when you take a level in another class, you don't lose your already chosen class skills. Instead, you gain a small number of additional class skills from your new class's 'class skill list'.

For example, (these numbers are wrong; I've reduced the numbers in this example for simplicity) if you started out as a Rogue, you could choose 8 (again, this number isn't right; you get more than this) skills out of the Rogue class skill list. These chosen skills are forever your class skills; even when you multiclass, you can put ranks in these skills and not incur cross-class skill penalties. Let's say you do mutliclass, into Mystic for example. You might get another 2 skills from the mystic's class skill list as class skills. They are added to your existing class skill list. This also applies to any advanced and prestige classes you might take.

Also, when multiclassing, you don't gain huge boosts to certain saves and get screwed on others; FFRPS works with decimal save bonuses and after level one, you no longer get huge boosts to saves. For example, if you started at level one as a Wizard (starting base saves are +.33 fort, +.33 ref, +2.50 will). In normal D&D, if your next level were to be Cleric, you'd gain +2 to fort and +2 to will. Well, in FFRPS, you'd only gain +.50 to fort, +.33 to ref, and +.50 to will. I know that it seems as though that weakened save bonuses (which, well, it does...), but I feel that this way just makes more sense.

A few more things... I added more skills and feats. Nothing amazing, just my way of increasing the options available for FFRPS.

A big change from D&D to FFRPS is the way Sorcerers (and Mystics and Warlocks, as well) cast spells. This also ties into how spells learned from Espers are handled (I have to thank Torm for help and inspiration for this, as before bouncing it off him, I was at a standstill as to how I was gonna handle this). Spontaneous spellcasters gain a large amount of Magic Points (MP) which are used when casting spells. However, spontaneous spellcasters are not the only characters that gain MP. All characters gain a limited amount of MP which can be used on spells learned from Espers (to be more accurate, from magicite).

Spells learned from Espers are learned as though they were learned via the Spell Mastery feat available to Wizards. Any spell mastered can be cast spontaneously with any available MP you may have. So, while Wizards hardly have anywhere near the MP reserves of a Sorcerer (a 4th level Wizard with a Charisma of 14, for example, has only 18 MP as opposed to what a 4th level Sorcerer with the same Charisma has; 50 MP), they can cast any mastered spells spontaneously as well as any normally prepared spells they have.

Other small things that have changed are how armor works and how weapon proficiencies work. As the old version of FFRPS, this new version's armor grants not only Armor Class but also Armor Rating, which reduces damage taken from a successful enemy strike. In regards to weapon proficiency, like the old FFRPS, this version has done away with simple, martial, and exotic weapons and replaced them with weapon groups. Not a huge change has occured, except now you get to choose what weapon group proficiencies your character gains from each class.

As you may have noticed, most of these changes have been made to streamline FFRPS. Things run a lot more coherently now, and it looks a lot more like a polished gaming system. I've added more things (which could be considered optional rules), but more on those when they're closer to being finished.

Any thoughts on the above? I plan on posting a few .rtf documents on some of the classes soon, maybe even tonight if I finish the Warlock (the only core class that's not finished).

Thanks for reading!

Urgh, I feel as though I've been working at a job. Ever since about midnight last night, I've been working on the armor and weapons lists. Armor is done for as much as I need it to be (there are still some things, such as armor modification, that I havn't completed), while most of the weapons have been typed up. I should have that done by the end of today/tonight. That's something for me to look forward to; finally having those two charts done.

Why am I posting about this? I need a fucking break, for one. Six and a half hours is far too long (and boring; fuck's sake) to work on armor and weapon charts. So, I'm taking a break to show a write-up of the stats for one of the cooler creatures of the Final Fantasy world.
