I have been working on this for few months now, and finally compiled the first copy of my 3.5e character generator. It's pretty much functional right now but many features haven't been implemented yet, and some parts of the generator is quite complicated, but for the first ever version, I think what have been done with the generator will suffice for now (and I am kinda lazy...yeah).

Anyway, I need some volunteer testers who would just let me know the bugs, spelling errors, mathmetical errors, suggest stuff etc so that I can fix them/add them.

If the end product (which I want to release before end of december) seems good enough, I will submit it to Opnpw's Resource Section (yes, OPNPW does have one, didn't know that did ya?).

Right Now the Generator can generate a character sheet in text file format. Also, it can calculate skills, feats, spells, school specializations, domain spells, domains and attributes correctly (or so it seems).

Future plan is to add some subraces, make the interfaces less ugly, create a help file, change equipment section completely, add scripts so that feats such as Toughness, Weapon Specialization etc actually affect the statuses and generate character sheets in .htm format.

Let me also make this post the bugs found/fixed post.

Bug 1. Feat System - (Found By - Mikkl) - The feats only worked for every 3rd lvls and skipped every levels in between. [b]Status - Fixed[/b]

Umm, I am holding a grudge against you man, you are not supposed to sound like you are supporting.

And yeah, I would love to have this generator generate characters that will be viewable or editable by OPNPW. But it all depends on how Opnpw's character sheets are set up and how far my limited knowledge of VB will allow me to set up my character sheets so that it's compatible with Opnpw.

But here's hoping..

I'm more than willing to help you test your char gen program, Dark.

I'm constantly searching for new tools to speed up my CSs...PCGen is great, but the coding for it is way too complicated to spend time on, imo.

Redblade is too simplistic.

So...still searching for a free program that works for me. =)

Dielzen and Striker, DPCharGen will just kill it self if it gets compared to PCGen or Redblade but hopefully someday it will reach that standard.

Nah it doesn't have stuff like that yet. This product is the first compiled copy of the program. So it will take me quite a long time before adding in such things.

Ill help out all I can. I would, however, suggest an alternate method other than drop down boxes.. you cant multiclass like that.. Prehaps a list of the classes with a checkbox and a input field for the level. This would take up a bit of space on le screen.. but meh.. I cant really suggest much else as I have not yet actually seen the proggie (just the screen shots)

Scroll box with the classes you qualify for, double-click to add a level in it.

If any skill points or feat selections have more choices remaining, don't allow the selection of a new level.

(all based on SSs, o'course...still waiting on the EXE)

I think there might be something wrong with the 3d6 roller... it only gives one number, unlike the others which let you see the individual rolls and the total... That and you can roll a 1... and a 2...which means it's not adding right... I think...

Edit: also when you select feats the "remaining feats" doesn't count down...

Now about the multiclass - I was actually thinking about that. This is what I was planning. I was thinking about adding a new form just for multiclassing. Whenever the program starts it will ask the user if he/she wants to multiclass or not. If He/she choose to do so, the program will open up a form named multiclass. where there will be two list boxes, one text box and one command button. First list box will contain the classes. The user will only have to select the class, enter the level in the text box and press the command button, which will transfer that class to the second list box. So a user can selected the classes he wants to pick and assign them whatever levels he wants as longs as the total don't exceed 20. The scrollbox idea is awesome, but I have never done anything like that, but i will give it a try.

Ah yeah, the 3d6 roller is supposed to give you a single number since, the rolling method is customized average character, which is just roll 3d6 six times and place it as desired. So there are no need to see individual rolls. But 3d6 rolling 1 and 2 is a problem, but I am fixing it.

And Remaining feats. I just got lazy there and forgot, so gonna do it now.

Updating the main post. The guys who I sent the copy of the character gen still have the problem however, so you guys just ignore them for now. I will compile the program again after couple more bugs gets squashed.

Edit: Also I forgot to give you a readme file or something that explains the school specializations. Because it is very easy to get lost in that screen (it doesn't appear unless wizard is selected and school specialization is checked. Here's a screenshot - http://darklook.bravehost.com/5.JPG )

So I am just going to explain it here. Let's take lvl 0, The first field (the one that shows detect poison) is the one where all the non prohibited spells are shown. If you select a spell there and press "+" it will go down to the list below it. Now the box that shows "Daze" that is for where your specialization school spell is shown, and you can only select one spell from there. Now the text box that shows the number "3" that means spells per day. You can select 3 spells from lvl 0 non prohibited spells. After you finish taking 3 spells from first field, you can then take one more spell from your specialized school.

I did not read what you fixed, but I will post all the problems I have run into so far- If I repeat anything, just ignore it

1) 3d6 rolled the following array (not in order) 18, 18, 16, 7, 2, 1
-Im not sure what to concern myself with more, how 3d6 rolled 2 18's and a 16, or how it rolled a 2 and a 1 O.o
2) I chose Cleric as my class, Cuthbert as my Diety.. and I would like to point out that you CAN infact choose domains outside those of your diety (Verik for example, follower of St. Cuthbert, had the Strength and Death domains, he was all about fucking up anyone who opposed justice or freedom.)
3) Also, with my choosing of cleric, for no reason at all I could only be LG, LN, or LE in allignment...
4) I dont like how you have to not only scroll through the list of skills or whatever, but also have to select it before you can do anything to change it.. I might suggest one of two things here.. 1- change that directly, or 2- get rid of the arrowy shtuff and use drop down boxes...
5) Back to the 3d6 rolliness... I know it doesnt make sense, but from past VB experience with random numbers, some simple things, such as output (showing the numbers before you add them) can affect the outcome. If you were to show the results for the 3d6, weather you need them or not, it could fix the 1 and 2's as well as how the hell I rolled 2 18's and a 16...
6) the most important thing yet- the ability to choose where to save your CS... christ, if everything were to autosave to C/... well lets just say I wouldnt be able to find it... not to mention I have special folders to organize all my DnD shit so it doesnt get mixed up with dads php stuff..

Anywho, I will get back to testing it out, Ill look into the different classes and races and what not and post again sometime within the next 24 hours or any time after that.........

This might be a bit early to worry about and you might have other more important things to take care of first, but I will post them anyways... If I am suggesting things that dont need to be done right now, then just ignore them and come back later...

Barbs can only be chaotic and the allignment options allowed me to be anything I wanted..

Also, the dropdown list for allignment, I think, should be reorganized, instead of organizing them by the law-chaos axis, do it by the good-evil axis

It seems a bit odd, but I like your GP thinger.. it is well organized, however a lot of mundane items and services cost SP or even CP, and they are not included... (without use of decimals atleast)

The equipment input area should include more information, descriptions, ranges, so forth..

no fighter bonus feats.....
... meh Im going to call it quits now, I have just realize that you most likely have not finished the classes yet (yeah, I havent read up on what you have and havent done)..

See I thought about that too, but I couldn't find anything in the 3.5e PHB that supports that. PHB says just this - "When you have chosen an alignment and a deity for your cleric, choose two domains from among those given on table 3-7 for the diety"

That's because I am guessing you chose St. Cuthbert as your diety. 3.5e phb says "A cleric's alignment must be within one step of his deity (that is, it maybe one step away on either the lawful-chaotic axis or good-evil axis, but not both). Exceptions are the clerics of St. Cuthbert (a lawful neutral deity), who may only choose lawful good and lawful neutral for their alignment. A cleric cannot be neutral unless his deity's alignment is also neutral"

So there should be actually only 2 alignment instead of 3 for St. Cuthbert, And that's fixed.

Dropdown boxes are a good idea, but that involves rewriting a massive clode block, so for now, I made the list boxes a little bigger so that it shows mulitple skills instead of just one, and so that selecting an item actually makes more sense.

Done. It now shows separate results.

Ok, now you can save where ever you want. Also you can save it as .xml file as well. So if you save it in a docs folder under your opnpw profile, it should be transferable through opnpw (in the backup server).

Ok, now you can you can buy stuff using gp, sp or cp, or combination of all. However the total automatically converts them to a decimal number, and in the charactersheet it shows up as a decimal number. I will try to improve it further later

Done. Whenever you add weapon or armor, it opens up a small form where you can enter further descriptions such as critical, damage type etc.

Fixed. It also calculates wizard's and monk's bonus feats correctly now. Also the charactersheet now shows racial and class features.

I will pick it apart and send it back to you in a nice little baggy ;p I will dedicate a few hours (maybe tomorrow) to just making a shit load of characters and finding anything wrong or anything that could be improved.

By the way... I'm not sure how exactly you are writing this up, but if it involves only a few minor changes, then mayhaps a 3e / 3.5e option would be nice- a lot of my IRL players still use 3e, but most of the people I play with online use 3.5e (thank you Saber for forcing the transfer of editions ;p)

I am getting a fever just by thinking about the 3e version. Basically my plan is to be one of the first people to come up with 4.0e character generator whenever that comes out so I rather stick with 3.5e. If you don't buy that...then well yeah I am lazy.

Solace, I will send a copy to you via email. Geocities just doesn't want to work once in a while just to remind the site owners that they are using a free service (yes, i really do think that).

[color=darkred]I've had that problem before. Randomly, when I'd download archive files, they'd take an expected time to download (not instantaneous, as if it would were it actually empty)... But when I'd open the archive, empty!

I have no idea how to fix it... It went away when I formatted the harddrive and started anew. :([/color]

The archive is probably fine, its probably your archiver of choice acting up. Winzip opening a rar made zip, vise versa.

1) Dice, when using 4d6 drop lowest die, it does not drop the lowest die, instead gives you the total of all four dice. (6+5+3+6=20, for instance). Rolling 3d6 does not add them up. It also lets me get away with putting in an illegal statset. A point buy option for statistic generation would be good, using the common ones (15, 25, 32). 5d6 drop two lowest does not drop the two lowest, either.

2) Tabbing to move between screens would be nice if we want to change something partway through and we are on a different screen, not really a bug, but more of a feature. There should be a way to go back and do something later. It would be also cool to have under the file menu a 'new sheet' option from anywhere in the process, as opposed to closing the program and reopening it every time.

3) Class skills ought to be listed at the top of the skill list, and cross class skills below that for helping one choose skills appropriately, or at least class skills should be marked in some way.

4) A built in equipment list including magical items and wonderous items would rock. I dont think a lot of us know the stats of all weapons and armour off by heart (Though I would wager Saber knows a great deal of it off by heart), as well as pricing. I'd leave the add new item thing there in case someone goes and makes a 'vorpal +5 longsword of extreme doom' or somesuch. Automatically dealing with lvl 1 hp would also rock.

5) It crashes if we hit 'cancel' on saving the character sheet to a txt file. It would be much cooler if it went to another page with all of the information laid out with an option of saving to a txt or xml file.

6) I chose a paladin and it lets me choose all alignments. I chose barbarian and it let me choose all chaotic ones... twice (chaotic good neutral evil, chaotic good neutral evil)

7) The weapon addition thing does not have a special properties field T.T What about level one gear when you have no gold: 'Club (stats) ...stolen from side of house...' and armour 'my face (stats) ... it hurts and stings!!...'? Some of us do enjoy putting stupid remarks in that.

i installed the latest version of win-zip especially for this file since using my earlier version had this 'empty archive' thingy.

Yeah those weren't made to drop the lowest die.That was created at a very early stage, and at that time the plan was that the users would manually subtract lowest die and enter the score in step 2. But I will try modifying the code now and see if automatic dropping can be achieved. I will also lock the text boxes so that they can't be modified. For the point buy option, just don't use the dice rolling methods, just enter your scores in step-2, that is why those text boxes are modifiable.

Since I am not using a parent form, tabbing to get to another from is basically impossible. I did try a back button once, but it ended up creating many many bugs, but I will look into it once again. I will also see what I can do about "File-New".

Since all classes use the same skill set that won't probably be done. It wouldn't be that hard to define a different skillset for each class but it will only end up increasing the file size (and will complicate multiclassing further). Another thing is, in the current version, you can still say which one is a crossclass when you try to add a rank to it. If it subtracts 2 points from total skill points then it's a crossclass, and if it subtracts 1 point from total skill points then it's a class skill.

There are just too many. I will deal with the lvl 1 hp.

It seems I skipped a bit of coding, I will fix it. The second part will be done later...someday.

Paladin alignment thing will be fixed. For the barbarian, I am not getting the same error. However I noticed the PHB says for barbarian that their alignment can be "Any Nonlawful" so I am going to add neutral alignments as well.

Not in the next version, but eventually there will be another screen where you can type in personal description, appearance other descriptions etc. You can put them there.

The current uploaded file is 0 Bytes, as in, it was uploaded incorrectly. As to the actual program, I'd suggest using a parent MDI form, and then spawning children Character sheet forms. Charactersheets would probably be tabbed, I recommend SSTab, Control+T 'Microsoft Tabbed Dialog' or such.

For the class skills, I'd use bitwise operaters? What do I mean? Well consider this.

We have

Climb
Jump
Run
Hop

Each one would be a bit,
0000
^---Climb

So, your class set could be 1101, or you have all but run. Stay with me here, its simpler then it sounds. So, we have a string for "Ranger' that says that the rangers class set is '1001", you can then combine that with another classes string, using logic operaters. Or just use them for speedy reference. See, I think I understand you mean. If the bit = 0, the bitcheck comes out false and that's not a class skill.

Maybe after the bitcheck comes out false I can do something like

Newstring = String & "CC"

to mark the skill as a cross-class skill.

I understand that it's simple, but I am not familiar with it, so let me just look in the books to see if i can learn more about bitwise operators and understand that codeblock enough to manipulate it to fit my need, rather then using it blindly.

I only meant the concept behind it was simple, implementation could be quite difficult. Theres other ways you could maintain class skill lissts, arrays, collections, hard coded. Just pointing out what I think is the best [and funnest] way.

Oh I know, and your suggestions are always welcome. I just don't know much about bitwise operators. And the book I have here, doesn't really explain much, other then that they deal with bits (these are beginners book, so what can ya expect). I will pick up couple of books from library today and see what i can dig up. And that code can improve my skill system, so I will give it a shot.

And about the parent MDI form, that I can do. But If I want to do it right now, I have rewrite a lot of stuff. When I have a generator that is capable of generating a good enough charactersheet that you can actually use in a game, i will start another project and make the same generator using a parent MDI form and transfer the codes there.

Go pick up, "MCSD : In a nutshell" by O"Reiley Books. Read it cover to cover a couple times, after you got the basics down. Its awesome. ..AWESOME. I love that book, my copy looks as battered as a reverends favored bible.

I will have to purchase that sometime.

I kinda gave false promises there, my last year as an undergrad appearantly will be much harder then I expected. I simply can't afford to spend time and concentrate on something that is totally unrelated to my study at this time. I will still work on it during weekends or holidays but I doubt that will be enough to release the next version within this year.

Also..I can offer 4 mirrors along with the 2 you have. Let me know what language though and I can help..maybe you can make it by the end of the year :) .
