Greets.

I recently downloaded OPnPW to play online with soem friends. I installed the latest version, set up my account, and set it to connect to the backup server "since all my friends were connected to that oen and said thats what I should connect to), but whenver I try to connect (by double clicking my profile name in the startup window in OPnPW), the program just hangs for a few seconds, then just closes, no error messages or any other windows popping up. I have Windows XP Home, (updated up to but not including XP2), and don't ususally have problems connecting to things. I thought there might be a chance my university's firewall was blocking the ports needed, but as its explained to me (as an employee of residential computing) the firewall won't block ports that my computer initiates teh connection on first, and plus since I don't have any problems with any online games or any other chat programs, I wouldn't think I would have a problem with OPnPW either, at least in relation to the firewall.

Any ideas?

contrary to your statement, yes your firewall can block you off. if it has a port closed off, it usually doesn't differentiate between "friend or foe" connections.

Yes, I realize a firewall can block ports, its intended to. However my questions are A.) Does OPnPW use ports drastically different from most other chatting applications such as AIM, MSN, or IRC? I have absolutely no firewall-related issues with any of those chatting networks or any online games. B.) In order to connect to the OPnPW server, does OPnPW attempt to connect to my computer through a port in which my computer did not initiate the connection? This is a specific "feature" of my university's firewall. If my computer initiate's a connection to a server through a certain port, and all information between that server and my computer are through either that port or any others in which I initiated the connection, the firewall lets it through. If instead, say I initiate the connection on one port, but the server requests information in order for me to connect on a port other than one I have initiated on my side, the firewall will block the servers attempt to connect on the outside port. And lastly C.) If it turns out that B is indeed the case and the university firewall is blocking the OPnPW server from getting or sending information to my computer from an outside port, would such an event normally cause OPnPW to simply quit, with no other window popping up, and no error message/box whatsoever, a few seconds after attempting to connect?

Thanks for reading.

Its not your firewall.

What anti-virus program are you using? OPnPW will check to see what your default [web] browser is, and some AVs look at this as malicous [I don't know why]. Other then that, it has to be something regarding your install/eviroment, I'll look into it asap.

Cool, I appreciate it. I'm told by the rest of my friends who use it that I ned to get it working post haste because its the perfect program for this sort of thing :). I have Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition Running, tried at least turnign off real-time protection but still no luck. Appreciate the response.

Downloaded and installed the new build fresh, at least I get an error this time :) :

"Run-time error '372':

Failed to load control 'Winsock' from MSWINSCK.OCX. Your version of MSWINSCK.OCX may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application."

I have a winsock fix utility that we get for troubleshooting dorm connections at work, so in the morning I'll try running that. We use it when student's network config files get corrupted one way or another (usually through them clicking on things they shouldn't be clicking on), the fix just resets it all to day one and all we have to do is re-enter the network info. Not sure if it would help my case, but hey, I have nothing to lose.

P.S. I like the new login screen :D
