City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Hey all,
I'm new to these forums. Apologies if this is not the proper way of doing things.
As this game is actually run in-person, we're not really looking for any new players.
Right, players, you know who you are. As ArchDevil has been subtly encouraging us to use this method of scheduling, we shall, just to shut him up.
Nah, I kid. This is probably a better method anyway.
Okay, how to start...
**LAST TIME IN THE CITY OF TOWERS...**
Our intrepid heros, charged with locating a valuable artifact by Lady Elaydren d'Cannith, heir of the House of Making, ventured deep into the abandoned depths of Sharn, the City of Towers. Fighting off construct assassins, swarms of vermin, armoured rodents, and clockwork canines, the trio emerged victorious, uncovering the lost schema and returning it to the light of the surface and Cannith's waiting hands.
Now no longer straddling the adventurer poverty line, our valiant band of misfits promptly found themselves once-more unemployed, though this time they had the coin to do something about it.
This week, in the City of Towers, our adventurers look for a more permanent place to hang their hats using their newfound wealth. But what's this? A message from Lady Elaydren? An invitation to a formal gala?
Do our heros have what it takes to network with Sharn's elite? What dangers lurk in the shadows of the city's highest points? What intrigue and wonder lie ahead of our courageous outcasts? To find out, stay tuned to the City of Towers!
[Cue opening credits montage]
**Starring...**
Rogar, the defiant warforged fighter, out to prove that no man is his master, played by Gimler.
[Rogar stands within a ruined chapel over the prone forms of his two comrades, throwing axe in hand. He hurls it into the camera, which pans around the flying blade to show it bury itself between the eyes of a hissing horrid rat.]
Krollix, the streetsmart shifter ranger with a score to settle with Sharn's criminal underworld, played by... Krollix.
[Krollix, bearing twin swords, takes on a suddenly savage appearance as new hair sprouts from his face and great fangs grow in his jaws. He launches a flurry of attacks against an off-camera assailant, leaping with a final silent snarl into the camera.]
And Toox, the wily changeling evoker, striving for chicks, money, power, and chicks, the four highest goals of an adventurer, played by ArchDevil.
[The clayfaced changeling struggles futily as an animated rope coils around and ensnares him in the darkness of a sewer, finally falling face-first into the muck.]
**Directed by Kinger. Soundtrack available from Virgin Records.**
Right, now that that whole ordeal is over (and don't bother PMing me, I'm sorry already), here's the message you had received:
Adventurers,
I am required in Aundair on urgent House business, and as a result must decline an invitation to a gala hosted by one of Bonal Geldem’s colleagues, provost Thomas Tinselwick of Morgrave University. I instead pass these invitations on to you, as I think you would find this to be a good opportunity to network with Sharn’s elite, and I’m sure many at the University would have need of your particular brand of services. Thomas has a particular fascination for adventurers, however, so be careful he doesn’t take up your entire evening with his questions.
I would rather you not go into details about our previous dealing. Divided as the house is, I would prefer the other factions not learn of them, and I think it better for you if they did not. Many who will attend Thomas’s function will be shameless gossips.
I have discussed this arrangement with Thomas and he is delighted, as I expected he would be, and more than willing to extend the invitation to you rather than myself. Simply inform whoever is at the door that you are there on behalf of me. The gala begins in the evening of Zor, this week. Thomas lives in the University District. The Tinselwick estate is easy to find.
Your patron,
Lady E.
PS: It is awkward to mention this, but you are expected to attend in finery that I suspect adventurers such as yourself do not own. I regularly purchase from Davandi Fine Tailoring in the district of Den’iyas, on the Upper Menthis Plateau. I’m sure Thurik can supply you with fine rentals at a decent price if you mention I sent you. He’s not far from the University District. Also, if it’s not too much trouble, I recommend you all have a thorough cleaning prior to attending.
Note that none of you will be particularly well-like in Sharn's upper levels, simply by virtue of your respective races. Warforged are typically considered less-than-free-willed and little more than weapons that talk. Shifters are thought of as flea-wridden mutts, and rank somewhere around "goblin" on God's Great Chain, if you know what I mean. And Changelings? Well, they're just not trustworthy, are they? You guys are going to need a hell of a scrubbing.
Now, as for scheduling, I'm not here Monday or Tuesday, and work until midnight on Saturday, but am available any other night this coming week, I believe. I have no qualms about having multiple sessions this week, or hell, an all-nighter Friday night.
As for our potential guest/side-character/buddy-of-the-PCs-who-just-happens-to-be-in-town (you know who you are, too), I leave it entirely up to you what you'd like to play. The party doesn't have much of a skill-monkey (traps have handed them their asses several times), nor have they got a reliable means of healing (isn't that right, Krollix?), but don't let that influence what you want to play. At present they're 2nd level, about average wealth I believe, and built using 28-point-buy. I'd rather you stuck to PC classes in the PHB, rather than any introduced in the various Complete X's, though if you can provide it on the day-of, that'd be fine. If you have access to the Eberron Campaign Setting, the Artificer is also a perfectly acceptable class option. Using D&D 3.5, with little in the way of house-rules.
Righto, now distributing emails linking to this thread... I had to guess regarding the profile names of those that haven't signed up for this forum yet, so I hope I can change them if they're wrong.

I can volunteer my house for Wednesday night if everyone's available.

saber and i are good for that. i have my cottage you hippy. we're playing there. we'll call people when we wake up (4ish i'm sure)

Well, I was under the impression we were running my campaign, but if Saber wants to give his system a go I'd probably be up for that too.
I assume we'll be starting reasonably early on Wednesday (if that's the day we choose)? Some of us have work in the morning, after all.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
we should be up by dinner time, i'm sure. afterall, we are getting here around 9am.
saber wants to know what books he can use, and if he can use a balanced class of his.

City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Saber doesn't want to ask me himself? I'm hurt.
Kidding.
I'm using the Core 3.5 books (PH, DMG, MM), though steering away from most options in the MM. There is enough to choose from in the PHB and ECS regarding races, though if he REALLY wants to I'd allow a goblinoid, kobold, or orc as they're written. As for class, any of the core, and the artificer from the ECS. If Saber's desperate (and he can provide the book during play), I'll consider a class from one of the Complete X's or a third party source (ie: Saber).
Prestige classes are irrelevant since you're all level 2.

Just suggesting it in case it was easier for Kinger. Didn't say we had to go here. Meh.
It looks like my dad will probably be working late tomorrow, maybe he'll be home at 6:30ish. With that given, would we want to wait till I have a car, or would Steve or Karl be able to give me a ride?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
I'll be driving, so I can give lifts. I'm already giving Gimler one.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Righto, that went well I think.
And in case you were too polite to bring it up, no, there won't be as much stupid socializing in the next few sessions. Krollix might actually get a chance to swing a sword next game.
Speaking of next game, how's everyone for Sunday? I have no plans all of Sunday so I can start in the early afternoon.
Current defining moments:
Rogar: Slaying the Horrid Rat via throwing axe, and throwing one hell of a tantrum upon being mistaken for a coatrack, plus the occasional skull-punching.
Krollix: Being knocked to negatives by the aforementioned rat in a single blow, and triumphing in a drinking contest with an alcoholic lord.
Toox: Being entangled in an animated rope for most of combat, and trying his damndest to bag that gnome professor.
Ryn: Managing to convince the Sharn Watch that that fellow tied up, wrapped in a cape, and thrown over the warforged's soldier was NOT in fact a hostage/corpse, but instead her rather inebriated brother, incapacitated for his own protection.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
sunday is a go on our part.
define early afternoon, since we're having a party saturday and will likely have to kicki people out and clean up. 2ish, perhaps?
"Zey goggles! Zey do nutzing!" - Saber, as Arnie
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Huh. Turns out I have baseball at 3 on Sunday afternoon. I can try and get out of it, but I have skipped the last 4 games so I should probably be there. Let me know what you guys think
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Well, when are you done on Sunday? Monday is a holiday, isn't it? Those of us that work in the morning WON'T on Monday, and as a result be less likely to quit early Sunday night.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Should be done by about 4:30. It's in Port, so I can be at the cottage by 5/530ish. So I can't do stuff from about 2-5 on Sunday, but before and after are cool.
Sorry about that, it's just we haven't had a sunday game for 3 weeks so I forgot about them.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
That's still good for me, I think. Start at 6, break at some point for pizza, and go until whenever the hell we feel like it (though I'd prefer I get SOME sleep before the sun rises).
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Well, I've now learned that Monday is NOT a holiday, the Monday AFTER is. Damn. Well, I don't work until 10:00 most mornings anyway, so whatever.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Righto. I've talked to Krollix and Archdevil about this, so this post is pretty much for you Kinger. As it stands, the idea is 5pm at the cottage on Sunday. And yeah, monday isn't a holiday (not that it matters to the unemployed) And we'll go till whenever. I like the idea of pizza at the cottage, so maybe some frozen ones that we'll cook up? We'll figure that out I suppose.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Sounds good. I'll make calls regarding lifts and such. I can drive again.
And hopefully you all won't find the next plot hook too contrived. It might actually require some oral surgery to remove, but I'm hoping it's something you'll WANT to attempt, as opposed to feeling guilt-tripped into doing. I like it, but we'll see.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
We've confirmed that Gimler, Kinger and myself will have some frozen pizza there. Should we buy enough for the cottagers as well or do they have their own food supply set out? If you want some, how many pizzas?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
hey ArchDevil!
I would like to thank you for inadvertently answering my question of "where the hell has Saber been?"
You are free to look very confused.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled, uh... scheduling.

Ugh. I've finally given up my dreams of skill focus (armorsmithing). I suppose I do heal up fast enough anyways and the feat can be better spent making me a greater machine of mayhem anyhow. So I need to take Improved Bull Rush, so there's one feat gone, and I figure I'll take Cleave (and later Great Cleave). So there's my 2 feats gone. And I'm thinking of making this my level of Barbarian and taking cleave now as a normal 3rd level feat, and then I'll have rage too. And then take 4th and 5th levels as fighter, so I'll get IBR at 5th level and then can become a Warforged Juggernaught at 6th. Any comments? Yay? Nay?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Sounds a good plan, Gimler. And you already have access to more healing than everybody else in the first place, sooo...
Right, so everybody's 3rd level now? Tailoring encounters accordingly...
So are we on for tonight as well, or what?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
So are we on for tonight as well, or what?
Seeing how you called me as this page was loading, it looks like that's a yes.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Krollix, I need to know what level that druid is so I can design the adventure and so everyone else can make characters. Oh, and just so everybody knows, the module I was going to use turned into a no no. Just way too much stuff would need conversions of a very difficult nature. So now I'm making my own, seeing as how I'll have some spare time this week. Oh, the firearms thing is gone too. And I'm not so sure about the sunday when I get back, maybe or maybe not. That's all for now.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Now that I've returned from Canuckland... When do we plan on continuing this thing? It's been ages since I've played a good game of D&D, and this one is definately a breath of fresh air.

City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Well, if you can direct me to the proper program(s), I'm probably up for doing something this week.
As an off-line thing before then, what would Toox, Ryn, Krollix, and Rogar be doing during a week or so of downtime? Toox is likely stuck scribing into his spellbook, but what of the rest of you?
Also, I haven't got much in the way of background information from anyone yet. At least, not written down. Here's as good a place as any to put it up. I've been able to determine bits and pieces of personality from actual play-time, but haven't had much justification yet.
In particular:
Rogar: Foul-mouthed, defiant, and almost anarchistic, a stark contrast to the generally quiet and easily-cowed warforged.
Toox: "8 copper pieces for a night in a bordello? Why am I only learning this NOW??"
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
saber, i'm pretty sure we aren't playing online until september.
gimler, what levels and such? details mofo.
Krollix, I need to know what level that druid is so I can design the adventure and so everyone else can make characters.
I'm pretty sure it was level nine, but I'm also pretty sure I don't have the character sheet. Can anyone here think of where it might be? It's been quite a while since its last use...
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Righto. I'm back from the wild north, but I'm off to London right now. I've been working on the campaign..but seeing as how I have no books it's been all from memory, and there's still quite a bit I need to do. It is not the Ravenloft module I had in mind, instead it's Forgotten Realms. Make your characters level 10, and add on another thousand xp for good measure. Any spellcasters who want to have crafted things have to take the xp from this total. The campaign will (at least start) with a woodsy theme, so the Druid is a good idea Krollix. And no, I'm not sure where the sheet is, I may have it somewhere, but I'm not going to look yet. Beyond that I don't have any real character recommendations. All standard PHB classes and races qualify. And all items must be approved by me. I'm out of town until late Sunday, but maybe MAYBE Sunday night some of us could get together and just go over character sheets etc. Well that's all I got for now.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
So, 3.0 or 3.5? I believe you don't have the 3.5 books yourself.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
3.5 - I have access to them.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
That last post was me by the way.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
So, how do we go about ability score generation? Rolling? Pointbuy? How about hitpoints?
If I can provide the source at the table (or couch or where-ever) would I be able to use feats from a non-PHB, non-FR source, ie: the Eberron Campaign Setting?
Just seeing what options I have available.
Any hints as to what we'll be doing, so as to prevent religion/alignment/place-of-origin/etc. clashes, and to ensure I make a character that would actually WANT to pursue the adventure?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Oh, how about standard point buy. 28 points shall we say? Hit points - how about full at first level and we'll roll the rest first session. As for feats, if you can provide the source material I'll consider it - I'd like to know ahead of time what you're looking at. But if I don't like it, you're not getting it, sorry.
As for hints - it really doesn't matter that much. The basic plot sits at this: Monsters are doing bad things, so you need to go smash the monsters for gold and treasure. So you can be motivated by money, power, boredom, or smashing bad things for good stuff.
And any idea if we're going to have a fourth? As in, is that stinky kid back in town?
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
i think he is.. i saw him 2 or 3 days ago.
what race/class is everyone?
"Zey goggles! Zey do nutzing!" - Saber, as Arnie
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Well, Krollix is sticking with his Druid (if he can find and update him). If we lack a meatshield I could go for being a fighter. Dwarven Defender, maybe...
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Whoops, looks like I missed a few posts. Sorry I didn't let you know earlier that I wouldn't be any good for Sunday. I still haven't found the druid, but I'll keep looking. Last I heard Sid's still around town, but I still don't know for how long.
I'm good this week except Friday, when I'm going to Barrie to see Green Day. I might be going to Palm Beach on Saturday, but that's dependant on me getting a car... so I guess that means probably not.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Right, Wulgar Stoneshield the Dwarven Defender is nearly done and ready for approval. 30 AC, 31 with Dodge, 35 when in my Stance, and I can add up to 5 more with Combat Expertise. Lovely.
City of Towers Campaign Log and Scheduling
Hellooooo?
Well, if anyone actually IS reading this, I'm contemplating adding an element to the City of Towers game, hopefully to encourage much of the roleplaying I've seen to continue, as well as to inject a little more excitement and fun into the game.
Should a player describe a particular action undertaken by his character that adds to the overall mood of the game, that player's character may be awarded an ad-hoc experience bonus. One-liners, amusing solutions to problems, exciting description of attacks or spell effects, characterful banter during combat, that sort of thing.
Good examples so far in game that I can recall:
- Rogar: "I swear, if he says 'Lord of Blades...'"
- The bet between the warriors over who could kill the most Ravers
- Ryn: "Actually, this is my brother... He's VERY drunk right now..."
These experience awards will not be shared like those from defeating an encounter. Maybe a little competition will keep you guys doing it. :)
Granted, this may actually be easier to accomplish playing face-to-face, but we'll see how it goes with a text medium.
Speaking of which, I still need to know what programs I need and where to get them...

This is the information page on the program, and it should get you started on knowing all you need to.
Speaking of which, I can't wait to play again. The setting and my fellow party members were all awesome and interesting to interact with. I want to lie to some more guards, c'mon!

Now it's time for...
** LAST TIME IN THE CITY OF TOWERS... **
Our brave heroes, after uncovering evidence of the forgotten Cult of the Machine God, scoured the city for further information. From the highest towers to the deepest depths, coins were traded for clues, old wounds were reopened, madness was witnessed, riddles were solved, and intrigue was weaved as new threats manifested. Who was that shadowy elf that claimed to be aiding them? Or that pale man with the mad eyes that attacked them?
Armed with swords, spells, and wits, our band of outcasts delved deep into the Cogs to the lair of the Machine God, where their goal awaited. Riches were uncovered, magic retrieved, and an ancient evil struck down as our heroes defeated the foul construct creation known as the Machine God. Emerging from its collapsing lair tired, beaten, and victorious, our merry misfits now have the opportunity to relax and enjoy their newfound wealth.
But tables can turn so easily in Sharn. What possibly awaits our heroes now? To find out, stay tuned to the City of Towers!

[Theme song begins as opening title flares onscreen over panoramic view of Sharn, the sun rising behind it with a lenseflare effect that really shouldn't be there]
**Starring...**
Krollix, played by Krollix
[A short series of clips depicting a hairy shifter follows:
- Krollix, in a darkened tavern, flicks a coin over the bar at the man behind it, leans forward, and inquires about something in a subtle fashion
- Krollix, dressed up and strategically shaved, sits amongst several men (one of which is slumped over the table, unconscious and dressed in a lord's finery), sings drunkenly with them and slops his ale everywhere
- Krollix, bearing twin swords, races towards the camera, his jaw extending and fangs enlarging, finally leaping into the camera to take a bite out of an offscreen foe]
Rogar, played by Gimler
[A short series of clips depicting a massive, black warforged bristling with weapons follows:
- Rogar, bearing a greataxe, cuts down several shrieking figures with a single swing, and follows up with a second strike without pausing.
- Rogar (now wearing a big hat and cape) takes an umbrella hung on his arm and breaks it angrily over his knee while finely dressed onlookers whisper in shock amongst themselves
- Close-up of Rogar slamming a stony fist into the camera
Toox, played by ArchDevil
[A short series of clips depicting a clay-faced changeling follows:
- Toox winks into the camera, his grey and near-featureless face altering before the audience to become that of an ordinairy-looking human man
- Toox unleashes a blast of magic at an off-camera opponent, bolts of power leaping from his fingers
- Toox, wrapped up in an animated and writhing length of rope, sways perilously on a ledge before falling downwards into the camera]
And introducing Ryn, played by Saber
[A short series of clips depicting a young woman follows:
- Ryn, clad in light armour and rapier in hand, barks directions at her companions amidst a chaotic battle with shrieking figures
- Ryn, brandishing an opaque bottle in one hand, hurls the vial at an approaching, lumbering construct, where it bursts into flame on impact
- Ryn, standing before her companions (one of which is carrying a bound, bundled, writhing, human-shaped thing over his warforged shoulder), tilts her head and shrugs as she smiles convincingly into the camera]
**Directed by Kinger**
[The party run down a square hallway into the camera, waves of fire and lava hot on their heels. The fire fills the screen and melts away, leaving flaming letters spelling "Directed by Kinger" on a black background, then fades to black.]
