Solace Campaign, DS Style

Solace's picture

Hey guys, i just wanna know if any of you would be willing to kink out some crap for my DS manual. Karlth and I (yeah, we're friends in the real world too, and yes sometimes i call him Karlth by accident) reworked his roleplaying-based system of Dragon Sphere for my campaign, it needed to be redone if i wanted to use it because i involve a couple more elements and i wanted to restrict things a bit more. So, with a lot of Karlth's help, we created a manual for my version of DS, which is being dubbed Solace for now for lack of creative thinking.

Do you think you could provide me with some input/criticism?

If nobody replies i'm not gonna bother posting it up on my rutgers account, cuz they might cut off my bandwidth and send me angry e-mails and stuff.. that's why there's no link to it yet

EDIT:

The current manual is available online here, you can thank rutgers for unknowingly allowing me assloads of bandwidth

I would be happy to read over it in my free time. I'm not going to garentee anything though.

Alright, well back to this dead topic that i forgot about...

Instead of posting it for criticism and such now, Karlth and i have been working out lots of kinks, adding all these neato things, and realizing why 3.5 has so many fucking rules.

I think it's safe to say that we're done with it, for now. Once we begin playing with it (DM=me, and also, in person only, sorry everyone). i'll probably change things around and perhaps add stuff in..

So far it's a vague combination of 3.5 standards for advancement, Whitewolf inspirations, and Dragonsphere-based. All you need to know of the third one is that it is based /heavily/ on roleplaying.

As of now the manual's length is 9 pages, single spaced. So yeah, i'm kind of proud. Also for those of you who i've had significant gaming experiences with you're in a special thanks section.

EDIT: i should also mention in the special thanks that i use people's real names, instead of online or pnp handles...so if you don't know who i'm talking about you can ask......Expect it to be posted tonight

Would anyone be interested in reading the game logs?

The first two are more or less summarizations, but the later ones (i'm currently writing 7) are progressively more and more novel like. At first it's simple dialogue, now it's extensive dialogue and large adjective variation.

If anyone's interested i'll start posting them here too, right now i have a mailing list where i mail it to the players of the campaign when i'm finished.

Currently the players are:
Karlth as Karlth, the dark mage
Dunlop as Askarius, the half vampire barbarian
Anduril/Greven/Muller/Andrew as Axell, the axe wielding rogue >>DEAD<<
Evan (a friend who doesn't frequent opnpw) as Vaenin, the lightning sorcerer
Gabriel (another friend who doesn't frequent opnpw), the Greatsword fisherman
Connor (he went on dndo once or twice), the future blacksmith who likes to test his own weapons.

It's turning out well, so far, but i warn you...these logs are fucking long as hell

Solace,

I read over the manual, and I have just one small little thing to say.

Wow.

I might (with your permission) steal this myself and see about using it in a few of my games. I like the way it's going.

One thing I'm curious about is the Tier system. I can understand the logic behind Tier1-5, but there seems to be an absolutely huge gap between Tier4 and Tier5 abilities (Case in point, Tier4 Int giving +4d10 to damage rolls, while Tier5 gives +10d10).

Is this in order to give someone that wants to truly conquer one area and devoting themselves entirely to it, a chance to shine? It seems geared towards showing complete mastery over something, but for Endurance for instance, the raising from 4/- DR to 10/- DR between tier4 and 5 seems massive, perhaps a bit overpowering when/if a tier5 character takes on a tier4 (as opposed to a tier3 taking on a tier4, who might have some slim chance at winning)

Depending on when you play I might be interested. So long as my scheduel matched up with yours I am in!

EDIT: WARNING!! WARNING!! WARNING!! You have a typo... two tier 4's for int... that is all.

yeah the typo was fixed long ago, that manual is a tad out of date. for one, it's no longer called the solace manual. I'll update it tonight, since at work my boss seems to have disappeared and nobody's here to give me work, until he returns i'm putting some more finishing touches. I'm constantly updating it. Dan...or Karlth, rather, ran his campaign, basically the first real campaign solely on Dragon Sphere (DS). To adapt it to my world, we had to change it, and dubbed it solace. Many things were added, and Karlth and I spent an entire night cooking up fucked up scenarios to make sure it was as balanced as we could make it. It's not done, and just like today's D&D, it probably never will be. The next time i put a manual up however, it ought to be a sufficient supply. The campaigns we're running right now are for two reasons, a) i need my D&D fix SOMEWHERE, and b) to put these rules to the ultimate test. It's really working well because it's so open, there's not much more i think we need to do at the current time.

The severe jump you mentioned is for just that, the character who wants to be a pure brute, once reaching the final tier can safely say he has ascended to a level above all else. I think we might change that, because our group has a reputation for playing extremely long LONG campaigns, and characters go from level 1 to 25, easily. This campaign is started with level 7-15's from older games, so i think adapting the tier system to suit higher levels as well might be in need.

So far, Askarius a level 16 fighter has JUST breached the 1000HP mark, and Karlth an almost level 17 mage can do a 3000 damage spell (max damage, of course). So far it's turning out well, i like the high number system because it makes me feel like it's FFVII
