Has anybody seen this book? I just picked it up yesterday and I must say its.... spectacular..

Long story short the chaos mage has no spells per day and no spell list. They just make up a spell whenever they want. The balance is that each spell he weaves has a DC determined by the elements which make the spell. In order to cast it the chaos mage needs to make a caster level + wisdom check versus the DC or the spell fails. Furthermore each time he rolls a critical 1 he checks on a d20 to see if he moves further down the twisted path of chaos as the backlash of chaotic energies perverts his body. Very potent, but unreliable magic that comes at a severe price.

What company is the book from? My nearest game store only has WOTC books =/

DM . . .when the coach is ambushed by goblins!
Billy RAWR!!! SMASH!!!
Cian I'll charge in and attack!
Me I'll cast bless on the party!
Aoife I'll hide under the coach =(

The Quentessential Chaos Mage

that sounds really munchkinish to me.

It really isn't. The risks constantly outweigh the pay off. Sure there might be a moment or two where you could pull off something entirely too amazing for your level but the chances of doing so as opposed to falling victim to the chaotic energies you attempted to command are slim. Meaning if you constantly test your limits you will eventually spell your own destruction. I haven't read the book in its entirety yet so I don't know the exact mechanics, but from what I could gather you take non lethal damage from casting your spells even if you successfully cast them. Could be wrong.. but you definitely do take damage from failing to cast your spells, and each time you cast a spell you have a 5% chance of suffering some horrible fate.

I am sure the class could be easily exploited by a munchkin who doesn't care about the roleplaying difficulties that the backlashes impose, but to somebody who actually plays DnD to roleplay it should be enough.

Oh, and its Mongoose Publishing.
