however, i believe pandas are almost extinct because of humans taking away their habitat. i suppose this allows developers to sleep spundly at night.

it is nice to see humans try to do something nice for the planet, but it seems in vain, as i just cannot foresee a time in which they will be able to run rampant without human intervention.

regardless, i'm pretty impartial, one way or another.

Arch, you are indeed correct. Due to the removal of their habitat by mankind, they have been toeing the line, as it were, for some time now.

Although in all reality I believe that what humans are doing is both late coming (it should have been tried far sooner), and also only [i]incidentally[/i] helpful and nice to the planet. It likely stemmed from a desire to sleep a bit easier at night. Regardless, it is helpful, and so that is a Good Thing (tm).

I think they should have gotten their tail in gear long before now, and helping out more than this (admittedly small, but noticeable) contribution. Just my train of thought, your mileage may vary.

This, of course, I understand. Still, my point is... What real purpose in the world's ecology do they actually serve?! Are they an important link I'm just not aware of?

I believe the original ecology behind the panda, and it's slow (and fairly difficult) reproduction comes from their life cycle. Pandas cannot be in areas too populated by other pandas. By which I mean that (unlike, for instance, rats or rabbits) many pandas cannot be in the same 'territory' as others, due to the amount they eat.

And the fact that they eat bamboo, which while fairly plentiful and fast growing in the areas they are native to, are not as plentiful and fast growing as, say, grass. I believe those factors combined limit their reproductive cycle so that for survival they ironically slowed down their reproductive cycles, to the point where the birth of a panda anywhere is a fairly uncommon ordeal.

As far as their 'intended' purpose, no clue. It's hard to pin an intended purpose on a lot of creatures that exist, however. Some animals are fairly easy, some are most difficult to tell what impact they have on the economy, especially when their native habitat gives way to more artificially created habitat, or proximity to humans (which can, and does, illicit changes on the part of the animal concerned).

At least, that's what I think. Not sure how 'true' it is, but that's my understanding.

Though, I am forced to point out that the eucalyptus plants are native to Australia. Most of the giant panda bear diet involves leaves, bark, and stalks of bamboo. Also, there have been some documented cases of bamboo growing 100cm (3.3 feet) over the course of a day, though. Several species of bamboo, found mainly in the subtropical areas, can grow as much as 1 foot per day.

It's far more typical to assume 3-5 inches per day, however :P

Just a quick toss-in. I believe pandas are endangered by the development because while bambo is fast growing and prolific, the pandas are quite particular in which exact species/genius they'll ingest.
